Whether you’re decking out your mantel, adding a festive touch to your entryway, or gifting something handmade to a fellow gnome lover, this little guy delivers big personality in a small package. His cute nose, leprechaun hat, and chunky beard make him undeniably charming — and totally addictive to make.
Once you make one, you’ll want to make a whole village. This pattern works up quickly, making it a great weekend project you can finish in just a few hours of relaxed crochet time.
About Our St. Patrick’s Day Crochet Gnome Pattern
If you’ve been curious about amigurumi but felt intimidated by all those tiny faces and fiddly details, this gnome is your perfect starting point. There’s no face to embroider or sew on — his big fluffy beard does all the work, covering everything from the nose down.
Seaming is minimal too, which is one of the biggest hurdles in amigurumi projects. You’ll spend less time at the finishing stage and more time actually enjoying the process, making this a satisfying project for beginners and seasoned crocheters alike.

This St. Patrick’s Day crochet gnome pattern is very flexible when it comes to yarn choices making it great for using up scrap yarn from your stash. For the my medium gnome body I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn in charcoal, and for the hat I used Caron Simply Soft Sage. I used the same Super Saver yarn for the hat buckle and some scrap yellow yarn for the buckle. I used this same yarn combo for my small gnome hat, but used Lion Brand Wool Ease Arrowwood.
The beard and nose are really what makes this St. Patrick’s Day crochet gnome adorable. I bought this set from Amazon which includes 15 beards in three different colors/sizes so I can make more gnomes (which I plan to do for all the seasons and holidays this year!) as well as the wooden noses.
I also added these weighted beads to the bottom of the body so they would sit nicely wherever I display them. A hot glue gun is the easiest way I have found to add the beard and nose, and of course you’ll need a little stuffing as well.

St. Patrick’s Day Crochet Gnome Pattern Notes
This St. Patrick’s Day crochet gnome pattern is written in US crochet terms and works up in continuous rounds (body), and joined rounds (hat), for a variety of fun and interesting skills. It doesn’t require a lot of yarn, and only takes a couple of hours from start to finish, making it one of those rare projects you can actually complete in a single sitting.
The only seaming involved is attaching the feet, but you can skip that step entirely for a completely no-sew gnome. Simply leave the feet off and your gnome will stand just as proudly on his flat base.
This pattern recommends using the magic ring to start crocheting in the round. Learn how to make a magic ring with our tutorial here.
