If you’ve been looking for the perfect handmade baby gift, this is it. A teddy bear crochet teether is the kind of thing new parents genuinely reach for — it’s cute enough to display in the nursery and functional enough to hand right to baby. And because it attaches to a wooden teething ring, it’s easy for little hands to hold onto.

Whether you’re a brand new crocheter or you’ve been hooking for years, you’ll find this pattern satisfying from start to finish — and you might just end up making a few of them.

Recommended Supplies

  • About 100 yds; Medium-Weight (#4) 100% Cotton yarn + scraps for the nose
  • 3 mm crochet hook
  • Wooden Rings
  • Stuffing
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

A baby crochet teether is a great way to use up the cotton yarn in your stash! For the gray bear teether I used Lion Brand Pima Cotton in the color called Stone, and the tan bear is Knit Picks Dishie in the color Linen. A 100% cotton yarn is the only yarn I would recommend for this project — it’s soft against baby’s skin, durable enough to hold up to chewing, and easy to wash when things get messy (and they will).

Once you have the yarn figured out, you’ll also need a teething ring to attach your bear to. I bought a set of rings off Amazon and they have worked out really well. Look for unfinished, untreated wood — you want something that’s safe for baby to mouth without any coatings or finishes.

Slst in the marked stitch to correct the jog from crocheting in a spiral. Fasten off and use the tail to close the hole and tidy the closure. Stuff the head from the hole at the bottom of the work.

Nose

Round 1: Make a magic ring with the following sts: 3 sc, 3 dc, 3 sc, 3 dc. Slst to the first sc to join the round. (12 sts)

Round 2: 1 sc in every st. (12 sts)

Fasten off leaving about an 8” tail to sew it in place. Before seaming it to the head, embroider the nose using your contrast color.

Sew the nose to the head using the photos for inspiration.

Ears

Step 1: Between the 3rd and 4th round from the top, join the yarn around one of the stitches in the place you want to ear to be.

Step 2: Ch 2 (counts as a dc). Make 7 more dc in the same place as the ch 2.

Step 3: Fasten off and use the two tails to secure the two edges to the hat, curling and shaping the ears a bit.

Repeat all steps for the other ear.

Assembly

Wrap the rectangular body piece around the teething ring. Use the long tail to sew the piece to the teething ring. Weave in any remaining ends.
