Skill Level | Intermediate
Finished Size | About 3.5″ long and 2.5″ wide

There’s something extra special about knitting for a new baby, and these little shoes are no exception. The rich texture of fisherman’s rib gives them a cozy, heirloom-worthy look that feels far more impressive than the four hours it takes to knit the pair.

Sized for 0–3 months, this intermediate pattern is worked flat and seamed — a great next step if you’re ready to move beyond the basics and try a classic stitch with serious visual impact.

About Our Babies Knitted Shoes Pattern

These babies knitted shoes are sized for 0–3 months and worked flat in a single flat piece before being seamed together for a clean, polished finish. The signature stitch is fisherman’s rib — a classic technique that produces a thick, stretchy fabric with beautiful depth and texture. It’s that stitch that gives these little shoes their cozy, heirloom feel.

This is an intermediate level pattern, making it a great project if you’re comfortable with the basics and ready to try something with a bit more technique. The knit time is surprisingly approachable — most knitters can finish the pair in about four hours. Recommended Supplies

  • About 50 yds; DK Weight Yarn
  • 3.25 mm Knitting Needles
  • (2) Small Buttons
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn, giving the shoes a soft drape while keeping them sturdy enough for little feet. I used Sewrella Yarn Classic DK in a beautiful colorway called “Giselle” — one of my favorite hand dyed yarns. Ashley does gorgeous work, and it really shows in the quality and color of her yarn. Just a heads up that many of her colorways are seasonal finds, so if you spot something you love, grab it while you can! That said, the pattern is flexible enough to work with any DK weight yarn you already have in your stash, so don’t let yarn availability hold you back.

A 3.25mm needle is the recommended starting point. Be sure to check your gauge before diving in and adjust needle size as needed to make sure your finished shoes turn out just right.

Babies Knitted Shoes Pattern Notes

This pattern is written for size 0–3 months. The fisherman’s rib stitch creates a stretchy, reversible fabric, so maintaining consistent tension throughout is important for an even finish. The shoe is worked flat in one piece and seamed together to shape— neat seaming will make the biggest difference in your final result. As always, check your gauge before beginning and refer to the finished dimensions listed in the pattern to make sure you’re on track.

Finished Size: When finished, these booties will fit most babies 0-3 months. They will measure about 2.5” wide and 3.5” long once assembled.

Gauge: 18 sts and 22 rows = 3” worked in garter stitch

Assembly

Step 1: With the right side facing down, fold the heel flap down toward the toe and with a scrap piece of yarn, seam along the edge. The whip stitch worked best for me, but any seaming method you prefer will work just fine.

Step 2: Repeat for the other side heel flap.

Step 3: Fold the toe flap up, and seam along each side to the sole and heel flaps.

Step 4: Weave in all ends along the inside. I find it easiest to do so along the seams which makes them sturdier, and the ends stay hidden better.

Step 5: Flip the booties right side out. Fold the garter stitch section of the heel flap down, and seam it to the heel flap of the booties.

Step 6: Add a button to each side of the booties near the top of the toe flap to finish them.
