When deciding which project to dedicate your precious crochet time to, there are a few things to keep in mind. You’ll want something practical that you’ll actually use, not just tuck away. Plus, it shouldn’t take weeks or months to finish.

This beginner crochet shawl is an ideal choice. It uses double crochet stitches, so it works up quickly and requires minimal effort. You can let your creativity shine with color choices – try two colors like I did for this shawl, or opt for a single color for a classic look.

I really enjoyed working with Knitpal Cotton To the Core Worsted yarn for this shawl. It’s a really soft cotton/acrylic blend that has beautiful tonal colors. I used the colors pearl white, and baby pink, but there are several beautiful options to choose from.

If you can’t find this yarn or prefer to use yarn you already have, look for another medium-weight (#4) yarn. Cotton and cotton/acrylic yarns are great for spring and summer because they’re breathable, but you can easily use a wool or wool blend yarn if you plan to use it in the fall and winter.

If you want to make your shawl look just like this one, you will need two colors. Color A is the one you’ll start out with, and you’ll need about 440 yards. Then for color B, make sure you have at least 560 yards.

Pattern Notes

This beginner crochet shawl is what we call an “asymmetric shawl”, and when you lay it flat, it has more of a right triangle shape. It starts at the bottom point using only a few stitches and increases on one side of the shawl only to create the shape. Some color changes can be incorporated in the middle, and I have instructions for how you can do that in the pattern.

With every row you finish, the number of stitches in that row will be one more than the previous row. The increases happen on the same side of the shawl, so you’ll have an angled side and a straight side.

As you crochet this shawl, one side (shown on the left) will be angled, and the other (shown on the right) will be more straight.

Once you finish crocheting the body of the shawl, it’s finished with a super simple ruffled edging.

The chain two at the beginning of each row does count as a stitch. So when you crochet the even-numbered rows, you will double crochet with your chain to make the increase. And when you crochet the odd-numbered rows, your last stitch of the row is the chain two from the row below. This is where you will make two double crochets for the increase on these rows.

The first stitch of the even rows should be made with your chain to increase.
The last stitch of the odd rows is the chain two of the previous row. This is where you’ll make two double crochets to increase.

Gauge: 13 stitches and 8 rows = 4″ worked in double crochet

Finished Size: About 80″ wingspan, and 34″ depth.

I wouldn’t worry if your gauge doesn’t match perfectly, because your shawl will function the same if it’s a little bigger or smaller than these measurements. But if you measure many more stitches and/or rows in 4″, you’ll want to switch to a different hook size. Too much of a difference can mean that you won’t have enough yarn to finish, or that it will be much bigger or smaller than expected.

If you need to adjust your hook size so that your stitches measure the same size as the gauge, it’s best to do so that way you’ll know you’ll have enough yarn to finish, and the shawl will turn out the size you expect.

Breezy Beginner Crochet Shawl Pattern Instructions

Row 1: Ch 4. Dc in the 3rd ch from the hk, and in the rem ch. Ch 2 and turn. (3 sts)

Row 2: Make 1 dc in the same st as the ch (inc made). Then make 1 dc in each rem st. Ch 2 and turn.

Row 3: Make 1 dc in the next st, and in each st to the last. In the last st, make 2 dc (inc made). Ch 2 and turn.

Repeat: Rep rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 135 sts. Then move on to the edging instructions.

Optional Color Pattern

Crochet the first 76 rows with color A. Then alternate color A and B over the next 16 rows for a total of 8 stripes per color. Then crochet the last 40 rows with color B. Finish the edging with color B as well.

Ruffled Edging Pattern

Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st) and turn. Sc in the first st, and next st. *Ch 3. Sc in the next st. Rep from * to the last st. Sc in the last st. Fasten off and weave in ends.
