If you’re looking for an easy crochet baby blanket you can finish pretty quickly, you’re in the right place. Our easy crochet baby blanket is more interesting than just a back-and-forth stitch pattern. We use four small blocks and arrange them in a really interesting way.
This beginner-friendly crochet baby blanket still uses just one stitch, and the yarn does all the amazing color work for you.
About Our Easy Crochet Baby Blanket
With this project, you’ll get to practice one of the most basic yet still beautiful crochet stitches – the half double crochet. It’s tall enough to make this baby blanket work up quickly but not so tall that little fingers and toes will get caught between them.
You’ll work the stitch through the back loop only, creating a beautiful texture that’s stretchy and comfy to snuggle under. Keep reading for more frequently asked questions, and pattern details, or jump down to the free pattern.

Recommended Supplies
- Approx 1,430 yds; Lion Brand Mandala Baby Yarn
- 5.5 mm Crochet Hook
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
Lion Brand Mandala Baby is my favorite yarn for an easy crochet baby blanket like this one. It’s really soft and nice to work with, and it comes in the most beautiful colors. The long transitions from one color to the next make this blanket pop. In the pictures, I used the color called “Diagon Alley,” but there are several others to choose from.
If you can’t find this yarn or prefer to use something from your own collection, you can use other lightweight (#3) or DK weight yarns. A yarn with color changes like this one will do most of the hard work for you, but you can also use a solid colored yarn to let the texture really shine.

This pattern is written using standard US crochet terminology.

Pattern Notes
As you’ve already seen, our easy crochet blanket isn’t your typical back-and-forth, worked-in-long rows kind of baby blanket. Instead, we break it up into four smaller squares which makes it work up faster. These four blocks build on one another so the rows are facing different directions. This is what gives it a geometric look. It also makes it feel like you’re finishing four small projects, instead of one big one!
Additionally, you should know that the chain one at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
Gauge: 16 stitches x 14 rows = 4″ worked in stitch pattern
Finished Size: 38″ x 38″

Frequently Asked Questions About Crochet Baby Blankets
What size should I crochet a baby blanket?
The type of baby blanket you want to crochet will determine how big you should make it. Here are a few common baby blanket sizes:
| Type of Baby Blanket | Width x Height |
| Lovie | 24″ x 24″ |
| Bassinet | 16″ x 36″ |
| Car Seat | 20″ x 24″ |
| Stroller | 30″ x 35″ |
| Crib | 30″ x 54″ |
| Receiving Blanket | 36″ x 36″ |
| Standard Baby Blanket | 42″ x 52″ |
| Swaddle Blanket | 48″ x 48″ |
While it’s a good idea to use crochet baby blanket sizes as a reference, it’s perfectly okay if your blanket doesn’t match them exactly. In fact, it’s pretty common for a pattern to be close, but not exact.
This is because some stitch patterns simply can’t fit within a specific dimension, and so designers get it as close as possible without disrupting the stitch pattern.
For more common blanket sizes, check out our Knitting and Crochet Blanket Size Chart and Sizing Guide here.
What is the easiest crochet stitch for a baby blanket?
The half double crochet is an easy stitch for a baby blanket. This stitch has enough height that it won’t take years to finish, but the stitches are small enough not to create loose gaps that can snag baby fingers and toes.
