Recommended Supplies

  • Bernat Maker Yarn, about 110 yds each
  • 8 mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

For my Starburst Crochet Placemat, I used Bernat Maker Yarn in the color Lichen, a soft, earthy green that looks right at home on a farmhouse table. It’s one of my favorite yarns for home decor projects. It’s easy to work with, the colors are beautiful, and it has a really soft feel. If you haven’t tried it before, it’s worth a try.

I’m often asked what hooks I use for my thicker yarn projects, and my answer is always the Clover Amour jumbo line. I really love working with them. For this placemat, you’ll need an 8mm hook, but it’s worth buying the full set if you use bulky and super weight bulky yarns often.

If you can’t get your hands on Bernat Maker Home, any other #5 bulky weight yarn will work. Just make a quick gauge swatch before you dive in. The first 4 rounds should measure 4.5″ across. If yours comes out a little small, try a larger hook, and if it’s a little big, try a smaller one. Getting that measurement right is what gives you a 13.5″ placemat.

Sunburst Crochet Placemat Pattern Notes

This crochet placemat pattern uses mostly double crochet stitches, so it’s approachable even if you’re newer to crochet. You’ll begin with a magic ring, the adjustable loop that gives you a snug, closed center. If you haven’t made one before, I have a step-by-step guide that walks you through it.

You won’t need to block this placemat when you’re finished. Made with Bernat Maker Home, it lies perfectly flat right off the hook, so it’s ready for the table as soon as you finish the last round.

Gauge: First 4 rounds = 4.5” diameter

Finished Size: When finished, it will measure about 13.5” in diameter
