What makes this ripple crochet blanket so much fun to make is the dramatic fan texture created by the triple treble stitch — it’s bold, textural, and unlike anything you’ve probably crocheted before.
This oversized throw makes a wonderful gift for a new home, a cozy addition to your own living room, or a special project for someone who loves color. The triple treble stitch takes a little practice to get comfortable with, but once you find your rhythm, this blanket grows fast — one triple treble row alone adds a full 1.5 inches to the length, so you’ll watch it take shape in no time.

For the blanket pictured, I used a variety of yarn brands from my own stash, mixed and matched to create the palette you see here. It’s one of my favorite ways to use up random skeins of yarn that have been sitting in my bins, and it’s endlessly satisfying watching so many colors come together into one cohesive design.
You can absolutely do the same with your own stash, or shop for six brand-new colors that fit your space. Just be sure to choose yarns with a similar weight, texture, and care instructions so the fabric stays consistent, and always check your gauge before starting, adjusting your hook size up or down as needed to hit the correct finished measurements.

Vintage Fan Ripple Crochet Blanket Pattern Notes
This vintage fan ripple crochet blanket is an eye-catching, fast-growing throw perfect for confident intermediate crocheters looking for a fresh stitch challenge. It’s made using the triple treble stitch, a taller variation that gives the fan pattern its dramatic scalloped texture and lofty drape. One row within each color repeat adds 1.5 inches to the total length, so the blanket builds height quickly and keeps the process feeling rewarding.
With six colors used throughout, it’s the perfect project for using up leftover stash yarn or designing a brand new palette to match your space. The finished throw measures an oversized 60″ x 75″, plenty big enough to snuggle under on the couch or gift to someone special. Once you get the hang of the stitch, this pattern moves fast, one satisfying wave at a time.

Pattern and Stripe Repeat
Rows 2-5 make up the stitch pattern repeat.
For the same stripe pattern seen in the sample blanket, change to a new color every 5th row. The stripe color pattern is as follows:
4 rows color A
4 rows color B
4 rows color C
4 rows color D
4 rows color E
4 rows color F
Repeat this stripe color pattern 6 times, plus one additional strip of color A for a blanket that measures about 75” long.
For the final color stripe, work rows 2-5, then rows 2-4 all in color A. Then fasten off and weave in the ends.
