I love making kids’ hats—they’re quick, perfect for using up yarn scraps, and the joy on their faces when they wear something you made is priceless.

This heart hat is also the perfect excuse to dive into a fun Valentine’s-themed project!

In this easy guide, I’ll walk you through every step to crochet your kiddo’s new favorite hat. Grab your favorite medium-weight yarn, and let’s get started!

About Our Crochet Heart Hat for Kids

This project is perfect for using up scrap yarn! Each of the three available sizes uses less than a full skein, making it a great stash-buster. You can stick with one color, try color-changing yarn, or mix and match multiple colors—it’s totally up to you! The pattern works best with medium-weight yarn, but that’s the only requirement. Any medium-weight yarn you have on hand will work just fine.

Recommended Supplies

  • Any Medium-Weight (#4) Yarn; 60 yds (baby size), 85 yds (toddler size), and 96 yds (child size)
  • Contrast Medium-Weight Yarn; about an additional 12 yds for the heart
  • 6 mm Crochet Hook (Hat Crown & Body)
  • 5 mm Crochet Hook (Band & Heart)
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

Scrap yarn is the star of this project! Grab any medium-weight yarn from your stash—you’ll need the most for the hat and only about 12 yards for the heart (plus a little extra for sewing it in place).

For the hats in the pictures, I used a mix of yarns. The smallest pink hat and the largest cream hat were made with Red Heart Super Saver Brushed in “Dusty Pink” and “Cream.” This yarn is incredibly soft and fluffy, making it perfect for cozy hats!

As for the hearts, I dug through my stash and picked colors I liked best. They’ve been around so long that I’m not sure exactly which yarns they are, but they worked perfectly.

Whatever yarn you choose, be sure to check your gauge with the recommended hook size. Adjust your hook as needed to match the gauge. For the Super Saver Brushed yarn, I used a 6 mm hook, but for other medium-weight yarns, a 6.5 mm hook worked best to get the right gauge.

Pattern Notes

This hat is worked from the crown down to the band. You’ll start with a larger hook for the crown and body, then switch to a smaller hook for the band to ensure a comfortable fit.

You can use any medium-weight (#4) yarn you like—just be sure to check your gauge. If it’s off, adjust your hook size to match gauge.

For the crown and body, the chain-3 at the beginning of each round counts as a double crochet. For the band, the chain-2 at the beginning of each round coutns as a half double crochet.

This pattern includes three sizes: Baby, Toddler, and Child. You’ll see them written in the pattern like this:

Baby (Toddler, Child)

Gauge: First 3 rounds diameter = 3.5″

To make sure your hat turns out the right size, it’s important to check your gauge. After crocheting the first three rounds of the crown pattern, measure the diameter—it should be 3.5 inches. If it’s not, try starting over with a hook one size larger or smaller and check the gauge again.

Finished Size:

  • Baby: Fits 14″-15.5″ head circumference; 5.5″ length
  • Toddler: Fits 16″-17.5″ head circumference; 7″ length
  • Child: Fits 18″-19.5″ head circumference; 7.5″ length

This heart will measure about 4″ wide. If you prefer a smaller heart, you might try my small crochet heart pattern instead!

Cut a scrap piece of yarn that’s about 25” long.

With a yarn needle, sew the heart on the hat.

For a patchwork look like you see here: use a third contrast color. Run the needle in and out, catching every other stitch in the last round of the heart.
