Pattern Notes

This hat is worked in a flat piece, and assembled in the final steps. Check your gauge and if you need to adjust hook sizes to obtain the gauge, then do so.

You can use any bulky weight (#5) yarn you have on hand, but again, check your gauge and make any necessary adjustments to your hook size.

While this hat is a little too chunky for babies and children, you can make quick and easy adjustments if you need it to be a little bigger or a little smaller.

To make it bigger – add more rows. About three more rows per inch.

To make it smaller – crochet fewer rows. About three rows less per inch.

Additionally, you should know that the chain one at the beginning of the row doesn’t count as a stitch.

Gauge: 11 sts and 12 rows = 4″ worked single crochet through the back loops.

Not sure what gauge is? Check out our comprehensive guide to learn all about it here.

Step 1: Fold the two ends toward the middle.

Step 2: Slip stitch the two ends together using both loops of the stitches on each edge.

Step 3: Fasten off leaving about a 12” long tail.

Step 4: To create the drawstring closure, run the yarn in and out as seen in the photo.

Step 5: Pull to draw it up, and run the tail around the opening several times to tighten it even more.

Step 6: Tie the faux fur pompom to the top, and weave in any remaining ends.
