Recommended Supplies

  • Approx 25 yds; Medium-weight (#4) Yarn
  • 5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Handful of stuffing
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

I’ve made this farmhouse heart crochet pattern using a variety of medium-weight yarns, from single-ply roving to specialty hand-dyed wool from my stash, and each one gives the hearts a slightly different look. Mixing yarns is one of my favorite parts of a project like this, and it’s a great way to make each heart feel a little special.

For the hearts pictured, I used Mary Maxim Woodland in Beige Heather, Red Heart Super Saver Brushed in Biscuit, and a hand-dyed wool yarn from a past Knitcrate subscription.

Feel free to experiment with different medium-weight (#4) yarns for this pattern. It’s very forgiving, and so far I haven’t found a yarn that didn’t work well or look great.

Farmhouse Heart Crochet Pattern Notes

This heart crochet pattern is made by crocheting two flat heart appliqués and stitching them together using a decorative border stitch. The heart is lightly stuffed as the border is worked, creating a soft, dimensional finish.

When you use a medium-weight yarn and the recommended hook size, your heart will measure about 4.5″ wide when finished with the border. If your measurements aren’t exactly the same, there’s nothing to worry about.

To make a bigger crochet heart: Use a bulky weight yarn and a 6.5 mm crochet hook

To make a smaller crochet heart: Use a lightweight yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook.

You can experiment with different yarn weights and hook sizes to change the finished size of your heart, and there’s no need to make any adjustments to the pattern. This is the easiest way to crochet a bigger or smaller heart.
