To help you learn how to use that double-ended crochet hook, I’ve come up with a quick, easy, and practical project for the season – crochet hair scrunchies!

These adorable accessories are one of the quickest projects you can make, plus they’re great for gifting, or selling at fall markets. You can never have too many, and this project is perfect for using up some of that lightweight yarn in your stash.

While having some Tunisian crochet experience is really helpful, you definitely don’t have to be a pro. They’re incredibly easy to make!

About This Quick Crochet Hair Scrunchies Pattern

While you can make great crochet hair scrunchies with your standard crochet hooks, it’s not nearly as fun! Tunisian crochet has a beautiful variety of unique stitches to choose from so you can make every one completely different if you like. I often turn to Tunisian crochet projects when I want to mimic knitting, or when I just need to do something different for a while.

These quick and easy crochet hair scrunchies have a solid chance of being your new summer go-to. You’ll start by using a double-ended crochet hook and the classic Tunisian simple stitch as the cover for a standard elastic hair tie. A quick seam and assemble, and you have yourself an adorable hair scrunchie.

Below, you’ll find instructions for making crochet hair scrunchies just like these, and I’ll share some tips for how you can customize the color and stitch to your style. Keep reading for that, or go straight to the free pattern to see how it’s done.

Recommended Supplies

  • About 80 yds each hair scrunchie; Cotton or Cotton Blend (#3 Lightweight)
  • 5.5 mm Double-Ended Crochet Hook
  • Elastic Hair Tie
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

I’ve made these crochet scrunchies with all sorts of yarns in my stash, and my favorites are lightweight, and either cotton or cotton blend yarns. If I had to pick a favorite yarn to make them with, it would be Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton or Knitpal Cotton to the Core DK.

Both of these yarns are the perfect thickness to get a nice drape, and they seem to hold up well to the rough use a hair scrunchie gets. But if you can’t get one of these yarns or you want to use some yarn you already have there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

Make sure your yarn choice is lightweight (#3), DK weight, or a light medium-weight (#4) like 24/7 cotton. Thicker yarns make thicker fabrics, and thicker fabrics don’t make good hair scrunchies. The other thing to look for is a yarn you know is durable. I wouldn’t go with something like a roving or single-ply yarn because these yarns tend to pill or fuzz over time.

The blue and tan scrunchie is Knitpal Cotton to the Core DK, and the cream scrunchie is Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton.

To make these crochet hair scrunchies, you’ll need a 5.5 mm double-ended crochet hook. Since this tutorial uses Tunisian crochet in the round, you won’t be able to use a regular Tunisian crochet hook or even a corded Tunisian crochet hook.

Pattern Notes

These crochet hair scrunchies come together in three easy steps: crocheting the tube that will cover the elastic hair tie, binding off, and seaming. First, you crochet a simple tubular shape with the Tunisian simple stitch and a double-ended crochet hook. If you already know how to crochet the simple stitch, it should be easy. A few rounds, plus a bind off is all you need to get the job done. Then finally, you’ll seam it onto your elastic hair tie to finish it off.

Unlike regular crochet stitch patterns, one Tunisian crochet row, and round is made up of a forward pass and a return pass.

In the forward pass, stitches are collected on the hook. In the return pass, stitches are worked off the hook. So for each round of this Tunisian crochet stitch pattern, you’ll see separate instructions for the forward and return passes.

This also requires a separate bind-off step to finish the last row of stitches so it matches the rest of the fabric.

Gauge and Finished Size: Your finished crochet hair scrunchies will work with any standard elastic hair tie you can find, and will measure about 4″ in diameter. Gauge isn’t as important for this project as it is for others. Use the recommended hook size and a recommended yarn weight and your scrunchies should turn out just fine.

As long as the fabric you’re creating has a nice flowy drape and it’s not stiff, it should work just fine.

When you use a double-ended crochet hook to make Tunisian crochet rounds, you need to pull from two yarn sources. That means you can use both ends of the same ball of yarn for a solid-solid colored hair scrunchie, or you can use two different colors to create a striped hair scrunchie.

If you’ve never used a double-ended crochet hook before, it’ll be easier for you to use two colors. That way you can easily know which yarn to work with as you go through the steps. The instructions will walk you through the details even more.

Crochet Hair Scrunchies Pattern Instructions

Set-Up Round

Forward Pass: Ch 70. Making sure the chain isn’t twisted, join with the first ch to form a large ring. Insert hk in the first ch. YO and pull up a loop (leave loop on hk).

*Insert hk in next ch, YO, and pull up a loop. Rep from * until you can no longer add loops to your crochet hook.

Then slide the loops to the opposite end of the hook, and flip it over so you can work with that end. Make a slip knot with your second yarn, place that on the hook, and pull through the first loop.

Return Pass: Then *YO and pull through two loops. Rep from * until you have a few loops remaining on the hook. Then slide the loops to the opposite end of the hook, and flip it over so you can pick up more loops.

Continue to pick up more loops and work them back off until you make it to the beginning of the round.

Repeat Round

Forward Pass: When you reach the first stitch of the round (the one with your second color), insert hk through the front bar of that stitch, YO and pull up a loop (Tss). Leave loop on hook.

*Insert hk through the next bar, YO, and pull up a loop (Tss).

Rep from * until you can no longer add loops on your hook. Then slide the loops to the opposite end of the hook, and flip it over so you can work the return pass with the second yarn.

Return Pass: *YO and pull two loops. Rep from * until you have a few loops remaining on the hook. Then slide the loops to the opposite end of the hook, and flip it over so you can pick up more loops.

This repeat makes up the pattern. Simply pick up loops with the first yarn source until you can’t add any more. Then slide the loops to the opposite side, flip it, and work a return pass until a few stitches remain.

There are no joins or seams in this step. Simply continue until your work measures just shy of 3″ from the starting edge.

Bind Off

In your last return pass step, this time make sure to yarn over and pull through two loops until only one loop remains on the hook. Then trim the return pass yarn leaving a tail that’s about 4″ long.

Then with the forward pass yarn, insert hk in 2nd bar from hk. YO and pull up a loop. Pull the same loop through the loop on hk. *Insert hk in the next bar, YO, and pull up a loop. Pull the same loop through the loop on hk. Rep from * to the end of the round. Fasten off leaving a tail that’s about 16″ long.

Assembly

Step 1: You’ve probably noticed that the stitch pattern looks different on each side. Figure out which side you like the look of best, and make sure that side is on the inside of the loop.

This is what the simple stitch pattern looks like on the front.
This is what the simple stitch pattern looks like on the back.

Step 2: Fold it up and place the hair tie around it.

Step 3: Arrange it so the long end is wrapped around the hair tie, and use a whip stitch to seam the top and bottom edges together. You’ll need to unfold the piece as you seam, and you can tuck any loose ends inside the seam so you don’t have to weave them in later.

Step 4: Continue seaming around the piece. Then simply weave in the remaining ends.
