You know that pile of leftover cotton yarn sitting in your stash, just waiting for a reason to exist? This crochet hair bandana is that reason. Made to match the Everyday Granny Square Top, it comes together from just one granny square and two half squares, finished off with a delicate picot edge that makes it feel far fancier than the effort it took. The free crochet pattern can be found right here on the page, or you can pick up a printable PDF available for purchase in the shop.

There’s something so satisfying about a project built from squares. This crochet hair bandana takes that classic granny square charm and shapes it into something totally wearable, using one full square and two half squares to create the perfect triangle silhouette, no shaping math required.
It’s a great one to reach for if you’re newer to crochet, since the granny square is about as friendly a stitch pattern as it gets, and the whole thing works up fast enough to finish in an evening.
About Our Crochet Hair Bandana Pattern
This crochet hair bandana comes together with simple granny square construction: one full granny square forms the center back, and two half granny squares are worked and joined on either side to create the triangle shape that ties or wraps at the front. You’ll use basic granny square stitches throughout, so if you’ve made a granny square before, you already know most of what this pattern asks of you. The picot border along the edge takes it from “cute square project” to “finished accessory,” adding texture and detail without adding real difficulty. It’s an ideal stash-buster for leftover cotton, especially if you’ve already got scraps from the Everyday Granny Square Top, and it stitches up fast enough for a single sitting. Whether you’re new to crochet or just want something quick between bigger makes, this one’s an easy win, and an easy favorite.
Looking for the matching piece? This bandana was designed to pair with the Everyday Granny Square Top — same yarn, same stitch style, effortlessly coordinated.

Recommended Supplies
- Lion Brand Coboo (#3) Lightweight Yarn, about 195 yds total
- 4 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
I used the same cotton yarn from the Everyday Granny Square Top, Lion Brand Coboo in the color mauve, to make this bandana a true matching set, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite bases for warm-weather makes. It has that soft, breathable feel that’s perfect for anything worn against your hair or skin, plus the stitch definition to make the granny squares and picot border really pop.
If you don’t have that exact yarn on hand, any medium weight (#4) cotton or cotton-blend yarn will substitute beautifully here. Just be sure to check your gauge before diving in, and size your hook up or down as needed to keep your finished bandana true to size.

Granny Square Crochet Hair Bandana Pattern Notes
This crochet hair bandana comes together with simple granny square construction: one full granny square forms the center back, and two half granny squares are worked and joined on either side to create the triangle shape that ties or wraps at the front.
You’ll use basic granny square stitches throughout, so if you’ve made a granny square before, you already know most of what this pattern asks of you. The picot border along the edge is what takes it from “cute square project” to “finished accessory,” adding just enough texture and detail to make it feel special without adding real difficulty. Because it only takes one square’s worth of yarn, plus a bit more for the halves and border, it’s an ideal stash-buster for leftover cotton from other projects, like the Everyday Granny Square Top it’s designed to match.
Most crocheters can finish this one in a single sitting or two, making it a satisfying quick win between bigger projects. It’s simple enough to gift on a whim and special enough that you’ll want to keep the first one for yourself.
