One of my favorite spring and summer projects is making a cute crochet market bag, just like this one. I love taking it with me to the farmer’s market, and stuffing it full of local produce.

This bag was designed with durability in mind, using two strands of bulky weight yarn. You can count on it to hold whatever you need to carry.

It’s a fun pattern that’s pretty easy to crochet, even if you don’t have a ton of experience yet.

About This Easy Crochet Market Bag Pattern

When you’re picking out which market bag to make, there are a couple of important things to consider. You want it to be strong so it won’t droop when you fill it up, and you want it to be easy to crochet. Plus, if it takes too long to make, it’s not very useful.

This crochet market bag uses two thick strands of yarn together, so it’s super strong and you can crochet it really fast. If you know how to crochet in rounds, you should be able to make this bag easily! Everything you need to make this bag is on this page, or if you’re ready to get started, you can jump straight to the free pattern below.

Recommended Supplies

  • About 630 yds; Bernat Maker Yarn
  • 6.5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

Bernat Maker yarn is one of my all-time favorite yarns for warm-weather projects. It’s really soft and a bit stretchy, made of cotton and nylon. Working with it is just wonderful, and it shows off stitches really well. In the pictures, I used the color soft peach for my bag, but there are many other great colors to pick from.

If you can’t find this yarn or prefer to use something from your own collection, look for another cotton/nylon blend, #5 bulky weight yarn. Cotton makes it strong, while nylon adds a bit of stretch, making it easier to work with. While there might not be another yarn exactly like Bernat Maker, other yarns can still work for your bag.

I wouldn’t suggest using a #4, medium-weight yarn because it would be too thin, resulting in a smaller bag than expected. Also, avoid a #6, super bulky weight yarn because it will be too thick and make the bag much too big.

Usually, I like to use store-bought handles for the bags I crochet because they seem stronger. I found this pair on Amazon, and I use them for almost every bag I make. I think they’d work well for this market bag if you want to use them.

However, the crocheted handle on this bag is surprisingly strong. It only stretches a little bit when you fill up the bag.

Pattern Notes

This crochet market bag is crocheted starting with the bottom of the bag and working upward to the handle which you’ll crochet last. As you crochet the bottom of the bag, you won’t join to finish each round, but rather crochet in a spiral so you’ll want to mark the first stitch of every round so you know where you are in the pattern.

Crochet the entire bag holding two strands of yarn at the same time.

Treble crochets can be a little finicky to work, so don’t worry if your tension doesn’t look perfect at first. But this bag will give you great practice with them! They’re much taller than the other stitches in this bag so you’ll fly through this section of the bag.

Gauge: To check your gauge, crochet the first 6 rounds of the bag, and measure the diameter. It should measure just shy of 4″.

Finished Size: About 32″ long from bottom to top of the handle, and 12.5″ wide, lying flat. The handle is about 2.75″ wide, and 18″ long when assembled.

If you need to adjust your hook size so that your first 6 rounds measures about 4″ in diameter, it’s probably best to do so that way you know you’ll have enough yarn, and the bag will turn out the size you expect.
