One of my favorite things to make when the weather’s warm is a simple crochet bowl like this one made out of t-shirt yarn. These bowls are adorable as a centerpiece on your table, your coffee table, or anywhere else you need to tidy up a bit.

This crochet bowl is just the right size and it’s my favorite to use year after year. The t-shirt yarn makes it quick to crochet, plus it’s tough and looks great.

Even if you’re just starting out, this pattern is a blast to crochet and super easy to follow!

Recommended Supplies

  • About 70 yds; #6 Super Bulky T-Shirt Yarn
  • 7 mm Crochet hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Finding consistent t-shirt yarn can be tricky. Since it’s made from t-shirt material, each skein can be different. Sometimes the thickness varies, or the yarn feels too soft or too stiff.

I did find a great t-shirt yarn on Amazon that I really like. Each roll has enough yarn for a good-sized project, it’s a nice thickness, and it has some stretch, making it easier to work with. I recommend trying it for this crochet bowl.

If you can’t get this exact yarn or prefer to use what you have, you can easily substitute it with another #6 super bulky t-shirt yarn. You might even be able to use a super bulky weight yarn that’s not t-shirt yarn, though I haven’t tried that myself.

You might also see that the hook size I suggest is a bit unusual. Clover Amour makes a 7 mm crochet hook, which you can find in most craft stores or on Amazon. This is a good starting point, but you don’t have to use this size.

If your t-shirt yarn is much thicker than mine, a 7 mm hook might be hard to use. In that case, try using an 8 mm hook instead.

Pattern Notes

This crochet bowl starts from the bottom and works upward to finish the sides. As you crochet, you’ll work in a spiral instead of joining each round, so be sure to mark the first stitch of every round to keep track of where you are in the pattern.

Depending on the t-shirt yarn you use, your bowl might be a bit bigger or smaller than mine. That’s okay! It’ll still work just fine. If you want your crochet bowl to be taller, just add a few more rounds. You shouldn’t need much more yarn for this.

Gauge: To check your gauge, crochet the first 5 rounds, and measure the diameter. It should measure about 5″.

Finished Size: Your crochet bowl should measure about 8″ in diameter and about 3″ tall.

If you need to adjust your hook size so that your first 5 rounds measure 5 inches in diameter, go ahead and do so. But if you can’t match the gauge because your t-shirt yarn is thicker or thinner, just use the closest hook size that’s comfortable to work with. The finished size will be different, but it shouldn’t be a big deal!

Simple Crochet Bowl Pattern Instructions

Round 1:  Make a magic ring with 6 sc. Don’t join. Continue working in a spiral using a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch of the round. (6 sts)

Round 2: Make 2 sc in every stitch. (12 sts)

Round 3: 1 *Sc in the next st. 2 sc in the next st. Rep from * to the end of the round. (18 sts)

Round 4: *1 sc in the next 2 sts. 2 sc in the next st. Rep from * the end of the round. (24 sts)

Round 5: *1 sc in the next 3 sts. 2 sc in the next st. Rep from * to the end of the round. (30 sts)

Round 6: *1 sc in the next 4 sts. 2 sc in the next st. Rep from * to the end of the round. (36 sts)

Round 7: *1 sc in the next 5 sts. 2 sc in the next st. Rep from * to the end of the round. (42 sts)

Round 8: *1 sc in the next 6 sts. 2 sc in the next st. Rep from * to the end of the round. (48 sts)

Rounds 9-12: Make 1 sc in every st. (48 sts)

When you finish crocheting the last round, you’ll notice a “jog”, and unevenness since we didn’t join at the end of every round. This is easy to fix!

Just make a slip stitch in the next two stitches to gradually work the higher round down.

When you fasten off, there’s a neat trick you can do to get a completely seamless finish. That way your crochet bowl looks nice and tidy. It’s called the invisible seam. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Cut the yarn leaving about a 6″ tail. Then pull the loop on your hook all the way up, until the tail comes through it.

Step 2: Thread the tail on a yarn needle and run it through the next stitch over, catching both loops of the stitch, running the needle from the outside of the bowl, inward.

Step 3: Run the needle down through the previous stitch, from top to bottom, catching just the inner loop.

Step 4: Finish weaving the tail in along the inside of the crochet bowl.
