When I want a quick project or need to use up a single skein of yarn, I always make a hat.

Even in the spring and summer, when I can’t wear my regular crochet hats, I love making a cute crochet sun hat like this one.

This crochet sun hat is designed to be practical, using a yarn that I think is one of the best for this type of hat. You can roll it up, pack it in your suitcase, and take it on vacation.

About This Crochet Sun Hat

When making a sun hat like this one, there are a couple of important things to consider. You want it to be sturdy, not too floppy, and quick and easy to crochet.

This crochet sun hat uses a yarn with a nice blend of polyester and viscose. It has the perfect drape for a hat like this and is very easy to work with. The crown has a beautiful lace pattern that looks complex but is actually very easy to crochet. If you know how to crochet in rounds, you should be able to make this hat! Everything you need to make this crochet sun hat is on this page. If you’re ready to get started, you can jump straight to the free pattern below.

  • Approx 219 yds; Medium-Weight Yarn (About 250 yds for brim option 2)
  • 5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch Marker
  • Scissors

Lion Brand Rewind Tape yarn is my all-time favorite for a brimmed hat like this one. It’s really soft and flexible, but it also holds its shape really well. Working with it is wonderful, and it shows off the stitches beautifully. In the pictures, I used the colors “olive you,” “willow,” and “arctic ice,” but there are many other great options to choose from.

If you can’t find this yarn or prefer to use something from your own collection, you can substitute with other tape yarns or a medium-weight cotton yarn. Just remember, the softer the yarn, the floppier the hat will be, so you’ll need to find the right balance.

I’ve crocheted this sun hat with nearly a dozen different yarns from my stash, and the result was a little different every time. My favorite cotton yarn choice for this hat is Lily Sugar ‘n Cream, and my favorite acrylic yarn option for this hat is Caron Simply Soft.

Pattern Notes

This crochet sun hat is crocheted starting with the crown, and working down to the brim which you’ll crochet last. As you crochet the crown and hat body, you will join to finish each round, but for the brim you won’t join and will crochet in a spiral instead. When you get to this section of the pattern, it’s best to mark the first stitch of every round so you know where you are in the pattern.

When you are finished with round 7, it will measure about 9.5” in diameter. This may seem much to large for a hat crown, but it will all work out in the next section. Unlike many crochet hats, when you stop increasing in this pattern, you’ll see an immediate change in shape.

Gauge: To check your gauge, crochet the first 4 rounds of the crown. It should measure about 5.5″ in diameter.

Finished Size: Fits head 20″-22″ head circumference

If you need to adjust your hook size so that your first 4 rounds measure about 5.5″ in diameter, it’s best if you do so that way the hat will turn out the size you expect.
