Cozy Little Crochet Bat
Halloween Crochet Patterns
There’s something about Halloween crochet patterns that makes handmade feel better than store-bought — pumpkins with personality, a gnome who took his witch hat a little too seriously, hand warmers that say spooky without saying scary. Nothing overly gory or complicated here, just fun, seasonal makes worth the hook time. Whatever your plans look like — a quick gift, a bowl of pumpkins for the entry table, something brand new to try — there’s a starting point below.

Before You Pick a Halloween Crochet Pattern
Before you pick your first project, it’s worth reading through the next section. Make time varies more than people expect between something like a lollipop cover and a full amigurumi build, and if kids will be handling the finished piece, there are a couple of safety details worth knowing before you buy your yarn.
How Far Ahead You Should Start
Not every pattern in this collection takes the same kind of commitment, and Halloween has a fixed deadline in a way most crochet projects don’t — so it’s worth being honest with yourself about make-time before you pick your project. I usually get the itch to crochet a cute Halloween piece the end of August. This gives me enough time to get it done and display it for a little while before Halloween rolls around.
As a rough rule of thumb: anything with one main piece and minimal shaping — a lollipop cover, a simple pumpkin — is a “start this weekend” project even if Halloween is a few weeks out. Anything with multiple pieces that need to be assembled and embroidered — a gnome, an owl with separate wings and a face — deserves two to three weeks of buffer, especially if you’re squeezing in crochet time in short stretches rather than long sitting sessions.
If you’re making something as a gift or for a costume with a hard deadline, count backward from that date first, then pick your pattern — not the other way around.
If Kids Will Be Playing With the Finished Piece…
A few of these patterns are the kind of soft, huggable makes that end up as toys the second they’re finished — which means safety eyes are worth a second thought before you buy them.
Plastic safety eyes with a locking backing are secure once they’re properly attached, but “properly attached” is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and they’re still not recommended for a child under 3 due to the choking risk if a piece ever does fail. If the finished project is headed for a toddler’s toy basket rather than a shelf, embroidering the face on instead of using hardware eyes is the safer call. Whatever stuffing you use, go with polyester fiberfill labeled for toy-making, and take the time to close up every seam securely — that’s where wear shows up first on anything that gets handled a lot.
Coming Soon This Season
Three new patterns are on the way this fall: a Halloween Gnome in a witch’s hat, an adorable lacey ghost, and a Farmhouse Owl Amigurumi that brings the farmhouse look you know from the spring collection into Halloween season. Both are still in progress — check back here as they go live, and in the meantime, the patterns above will keep your hook busy.
