If you’re looking for an eye-catching addition to sew to your project, this gorgeous popcorn stitch flower is perfect! It’s one of my favorites because it has enough texture to catch your eye and create a beautiful focal point, but it’s relatively flat making it really easy to sew to your project. You can easily attach them to a hat, bag, or stitch them all over a blanket.

Each one of these popcorn stitch flowers works up in about 15 to 30 minutes (depending on the size) with any medium-weight scrap yarn you have lying around.

Recommended Supplies

  • About 40 yds; Any medium weight yarn
  • 5.5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

This popcorn stitch flower applique pattern is super versatile, so you can use just about any yarn you have on hand. I’ve found it looks best in a medium-weight (#4) yarn, but if you need to make the flower smaller, try using a thinner yarn (I’ve included more on that in the pattern notes section!).

For the flowers you see in the photos here, I used Scheepjeswol Stone Washed XL—and I love how the soft, textured color adds to the look of the flower. But honestly, this pattern looks beautiful in all kinds of yarn: solids, semi-solids, tonals, even variegated yarns.

Don’t be afraid to play around and experiment! I haven’t found a yarn I didn’t love with this pattern.

Popcorn Stitch Flower Pattern Notes

This popcorn stitch flower pattern, like many of my other free flower patterns, is crocheted in rounds, with the popcorn stitch shaping the petals for a fun and interesting texture.

I’ve included one size that’s perfect for attaching to projects using medium-weight (#4) yarn. But if you’re aiming for smaller appliques, feel free to try thinner yarn and smaller hook sizes. If you’re unsure which hook size to use with a lighter yarn, check the yarn label for a recommended size as a good starting point. You’ll want a hook small enough to keep the stitches tight, ensuring the flower doesn’t end up too airy or open.

To make larger spiral appliques, simply switch to a thicker yarn and bigger hooks. Alternatively, adjusting the number of petal rounds will let you customize the flower size to your liking!

Gauge: Use the finished size to check the gauge.

Finished Sizes: Small – 3″ diameter; Medium – 4″ diameter; Large – 5″ diameter

Finishing Your Popcorn Stitch Flower

These popcorn stitch flowers will look pretty good right off the hook, but like most finished projects, they can benefit from a little blocking if you don’t plan to sew them to a project. If you’re unfamiliar with blocking, check out my article here which will show you everything you need to know!

To sew them to a project, I usually use a scrap piece of yarn in the same color as the flower and stitch along the entire outer edge of the flower, that way all the petals lay perfectly flat.
