If you’re looking for an eye-catching addition to sew to your project, this gorgrous spiral crochet flower is perfect! It’s one of my favorites because it has enough texture to catch your eye and create a beautiful focal point, but it’s almost completely flat making it really easy to sew to your project. You can easily attach them to a hat, bag, or stitch them all over a blanket. I’ve even turned this flower into a coaster!

Each one of these spiral crochet flowers works up in about 15 to 30 minutes (depending on the size) with any medium-weight scrap yarn you have lying around.

About this Spiral Crochet Flower Pattern

This spiral crochet flower pattern is probably one of the most interesting patterns you’ll ever crochet, especially flower patterns! Crocheted in rows, each new layer builds on the last to create an eye-catching spiral design. You’ll use a variety of stitches and techniques, so it’s a great opportunity to brush up on your pattern-reading skills!

I have included three sizes so you can make the flower that’s perfect for your project. They are beautiful on their own, but they’re also perfect for layering to add an extra pop of color and texture to your project.

Recommended Supplies

  • About 15 yds Medium-Weight (#4) Yarn; Small Flower
  • About 18 yds Medium-Weight (#4) Yarn; Medium Flower
  • About 30 yds Medium-Weight (#4) Yarn; Large Flower
  • 3.25 mm Crochet Hook; Small Flower
  • 3.75 mm Crochet Hook; Medium Flower
  • 4.5 mm Crochet Hook; Large Flower
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

This spiral crochet flower applique pattern is really versatile so you can use just about any yarn you want. I have found it looks best crocheted in a medium-weight (#4) yarn, but you can also try using thinner yarns if you need to make them smaller (more on that in the pattern notes section!)

For the flowers you see in the photos here, I used Scheepjeswol Stone Washed XL yarn, and I love how the coloration adds to the texture of the flower. But this pattern looks great in a solid yarn, other semi-solid yarns, tonal yarns – it even looks great with variegated yarns.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the yarn you have on hand. I haven’t found any yarn that I didn’t love for this pattern!

Spiral Crochet Flower Applique Pattern Notes

This spiral crochet flower applique is crocheted in rows that build and join to a center ring that’s crocheted in the first step. You’ll use a variety of stitches to shape the petals, including slip stitches for a little extra texture. You’ll notice the center of the ring will get a little crowded, but all you need to do is shift the rows to make room for all of them.

I have included three sizes that work perfectly for medium-weight (#4) yarn and the recommended hook sizes, but if you need to make even smaller appliques, you can try using even thinner yarn and smaller hook sizes. If you’re not sure which hook size to use with a thinner yarn, the label can give you a good reference point to start. You want to choose a hook size that’s small enough for the stitches to be tight and condensed so the flower isn’t open or airy.

If you’d like to make even bigger spiral appliques, the best way to do so is to use a thicker yarn and bigger hooks.

Gauge: Use the finished size to check the gauge.

Finished Sizes: Small – 3″ diameter; Medium – 4″ diameter; Large – 5″ diameter

Finishing Your Spiral Crochet Flower

These spiral crochet flower appliques will look pretty good right off the hook, but like most finished projects, they can benefit from a little blocking if you don’t plan to sew them to a project. If you’re unfamiliar with blocking, check out my article here which will show you everything you need to know!

To sew them to a project, I usually use a scrap piece of yarn in the same color as the flower and stitch along the entire outer edge of the flower, that way all the points lay perfectly flat.
