A crochet flower is the perfect finishing touch for a hat, baby blanket, or any project, really! They make unique wall decorations and are absolutely darling in a frame or shadow box. You can even attach magnets to the back to brighten up your refrigerator!

Each one of these cute little bullion stitch flowers works up in less than 15 minutes with any medium-weight scrap yarn you have lying around.

About this Pattern

If you’re looking for a crochet flower that’s unlike anything you’ve tried before, you’re in the right place. Bullion stitches are so unique and they make a beautiful flower.

With this project you’ll learn how to crochet bullion stitches the easy way; with a latch hook. If you don’t have a latch hook or can’t buy one, you can use a crochet hook instead. Just wrap the loops around the hook the same as with the latch hook. Just know it’s a tad difficult to finish the stitch.

Recommended Supplies

  • About 12 yds; Any medium weight yarn
  • 5.5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

Since you only need about 12 yards of yarn for each bullion stitch flower, this makes it great for using up scrap yarn. Choosing bold colors will help it stand out, but it honestly looks great with every color of yarn I tried. I used Patons Classic Wool Worsted for the flowers in the pictures because I just love the color options.

You can drastically change the look of your crochet flowers simply by changing up the yarn! While medium-weight is optimal for this bullion stitch flower, it also works well with lightweight, bulky, and super-bulky yarns.

Abbreviations

This pattern is written using standard US crochet terminology.

  • BS Bullion Stitch**
  • Ch Chain
  • Cont Continue
  • Hk Hook
  • Sc Single Crochet
  • Slst Slip Stitch
  • St(s) Stitch(es)

Special Stitches

** Bullion Stitch (BS): Wrap yarn around hk 8 times. Insert hk in designated stitch, YO and pull up a loop. Pull loop through all loops on hk. Ch 1 (make this chain loose to preserve the height of the stitch).

Bullion Stitch Crochet Flower Pattern Notes

Bullion Stitches are finicky, but well worth the extra effort. I find that if you “walk your hook” through each of the wraps one by one, it’s much easier to manage. Also pulling up on the working loop before the chain that finishes the bullion stitch will shift the wraps enough to make them more uniform.

I also think that the best way to fasten off is with the invisible join. Check out my video here to see how it’s done.

Expect that the first few flowers you make will be practice runs. Your bullion stitches will get better with every one! If you’re struggling with your regular hook, it’s possible to make bullion stitches with a latch hook. This method is quite a bit easier, and they usually look better! Just remove your crochet hook after finishing the first round, and use the latch hook for the entirety of the second round.

It’s best to use a magic ring to start this project. If you’re unfamiliar with this technique, check out my beginner guide here.

To make a bigger bullion stitch flower: Use a bulky weight yarn and a 6.5 mm crochet hook

To make a smaller bullion stitch flower: Use a lightweight yarn and a 4 mm crochet hook.

You can experiment with different yarn weights and hook sizes to change the finished size of your butterfly, and there’s no need to make any adjustments to the pattern. This is the easiest way to crochet a bigger or smaller flower.
