About Our Easy Crochet Gift Bag Pattern

This pattern is made with medium-weight yarn, which gives the bag structure while still keeping it soft and flexible. You can use a variety of textures and colors, but smooth, solid yarns really allow the beautiful star stitch pattern to shine.

It’s a great project for using up leftover yarn and smaller scraps you may already have on hand. Since it works up quickly, it’s also perfect for last-minute gifts when you need something thoughtful in a hurry.

Recommended Supplies

I’ve made these cute crochet gift bags using a variety of medium-weight yarns, from textured alpaca blends to specialty hand-dyed wool from my stash, and every one has turned out beautifully. Honestly, I haven’t found a yarn yet that didn’t work or that I didn’t love for this pattern.

For the bags pictured, I used Mary Maxim Woodland (red), Lion Brand Heartland (pink), and Patons Classic Wool Worsted (blue). These yarns range from smooth to lightly textured to quite textured, which shows how much the look and feel of your yarn can change the overall style of the finished crochet gift bag.

Feel free to experiment with different medium-weight (#4) yarns for this pattern. It’s very forgiving and works well with a wide range of fibers, making it perfect for using what you already have on hand.

Easy Crochet Gift Bag Pattern Notes

  • This crochet gift bag is worked in the round from the bottom up.
  • The base is made first, then the body is worked in star stitch before finishing with a simple drawstring closure.
  • The star stitch is worked over a multiple of stitches and may look tight at first, but it will relax as you continue.
  • This pattern is very forgiving, so feel free to experiment with different medium-weight (#4) yarns from your stash.

Easy Crochet Gift Bag Pattern

Round 1: Ch 14. Hdc in the 2nd ch from the hk, and in each ch to the last. Make 5 hdc in the last ch, turning the chain clockwise (counter for lefties) as you go. Then working in the under side of the ch, hdc in each ch to the last. Then make 4 hdc in the last ch (with the fist hdc of the round). Slst to the first hdc to join the round. (32 sts)

Round 2:

Ch 3
Insert hk in 2nd ch from the hk, YO and pull up a loop.
Insert hk in the next ch, YO and pull up a loop.
Insert hk in the next hdc, YO and pull up a loop.
Insert hk in the next hdc, YO and pull up a loop.
YO and pull through all 5 loops.

Then ch 1 to close the star stitch. The remaining star stitches in this round are similar, but the first couple of loops are worked in the previous star stitch. Here’s what that looks like:

Insert hk through the ch, YO and pull up a loop.
Insert hk through next hdc, YO and pull up a loop.
Insert hk through next hdc, YO and pull up a loop.
YO and pull through all four loops on the hk.

Then ch 1 to close the star stitch.

The remaining star stitches in this round will have four loops. In subsequent rounds they will have five loops.

Repeat the last four steps to make star stitches around. When you get to the last star stitch, don’t make a chain to close the stitch. Continue to the joining step.

Slst to the 3rd ch to join the round.

Round 3: Ch 3. [Insert hk in 2nd ch from the hk, YO and pull up a loop] twice.

Insert hk through the ch of the star stitch below. YO and pull up a loop.
Insert hk through next st. YO and pull up a loop.

YO and pull through all 5 loops on the hk. Like before, the remaining star stitches in this round are similar, but the first couple of loops are worked in the previous star stitch. Here’s what that looks like:

Insert hk through the ch, YO and pull up a loop.
Insert hk through the same st as the star stitch below, YO and pull up a loop.
Insert hk through next ch, YO and pull up a loop.
Insert hk through the next st, YO and pull up a loop.
YO and pull through all five loops on the hk.

Repeat the last five steps to make star stitches around.

When you get to the loop of the last star stitch, insert the hk through the space between the last star stitch and slip stitch of the previous round.

YO and pull through all five loops to finish the star stitch. Don’t make a chain to close the stitch. Slst to the 3rd ch to join the round.

Rounds 4-10: Rep round 3

Round 11: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), then make 1 hdc in every st. Slst to the first hdc to join the round. (32 sts)

Round 12: Ch 2 (counts as hdc and one ch). *Sk one st, and hdc in the next. Rep from * to the last st. Ch 1, sk the last st and slst to the first ch to join the round.

Round 13: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), and make 1 hdc in every st and every ch-1 sp. Slst to the first hdc to join the round. (32 sts)

Rounds 14-15: Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), and make 1 hdc in every st. Slst to the first hdc to join the round. (32 sts)

Round 16: Ch 3, slst in the same st. *Slst in the next two sts. Then ch 3 and slst in the same st. Rep from * to the end of the round.

Fasten off.

You can use yarn, ribbon or twine for the drawstring. Cut a piece that’s about 10” long. Weave it in and out of the round 12 stitches. To close the bag, draw it up and tie a cute bow.
