Recommended Supplies
- About 285 yds; Bulky Weight (#5) Yarn
- 6.5 mm Crochet Hook or size needed to obtain gauge
- Stitch Marker
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
I’ve made this easy crochet cowl using a variety of bulky weight yarns from single ply roving yarns, to specialty hand-dyed wool from my stash, and I love them all!

Feel free to experiment with different bulky weight (#5) yarns for this pattern! It’s very flexible, and so far, I haven’t found a yarn that didn’t work or that I didn’t love! Just remember to check your gauge and adjust your hook size if needed. Gauge isn’t as critical for a project like a cowl, but it’s still good to check!

Easy Crochet Cowl Pattern Notes
This easy crochet cowl is crocheted in the round starting with an interesting and beautiful ribbed pattern. Then you’ll move on to the fast-growing middle section of clustered stitches. And finally, you’ll finish the cowl with a ribbing that mirrors the other side.
You can use any bulky weight (#5) yarn you like. Just remember to check your gauge and adjust your hook size if needed.
Gauge: 6 stitches and 7 rounds = 2″ worked in band stitch pattern
Finished size: Your finished cowl will measure about 16″x10″ lying flat. This is a great size for an oversized circumference, so it’s very comfortable to wear.
Easy Crochet Cowl Written Pattern
Round 1: Ch 90. Being careful not to twist the chain, slst to the first chain to form a ring. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch). Then make 1 hdc in every chain. Don’t join. Cont working in a spiral.
Rounds 2-5: Hdc through the BBO of the first hdc. PM in this st. Then make a hdc through each rem st. When you come to the marked stitch, remove the marker, hdc through the BBO and replace the marker in the new stitch. This marked stitch is to help you know what stitch is the first of each new round. Don’t join at the end of round 5. Cont to the next round.
Round 6: Sc in the BBO of the marked st, and replace the marker. Then make one sc in the BBO of each rem st. Cont to the next round.
Round 7: Using the marked st as the first st, and working through both loops of the sc st, make a dcCL. *Ch 1, skip one st, and dcCL in the next st. Rep from * to the end of the round.
Rounds 8-16: In the sp between the next sc and dcCL, make a dcCL. Remove the marker. *Ch 1, sk the next dcCL, and dcCL in the space bet the next two dcCL. Rep from * to the end of the round. Cont with the same repeat throughout the rounds in this repeat.
Optional Color change: If you want a cowl that looks just like this one, switch to a new color for rounds 11 and 12. Then switch back to your original color for rounds 13-16.
After finishing round 16, continue with the next round.
Round 17: *Make 1 hdc in the next dcCL, and 1 hdc in the next ch 1-sp. Rep from * to the end of the round. (90 sts)
Rounds 18-22:Hdc through the BBO of the first hdc. PM in this st. Then make a hdc through each rem st. When you come to the marked stitch, remove the marker, hdc through the BBO and replace the marker in the new stitch. This marked stitch is to help you know what stitch is the first of each new round.
At the end of round 22, remove the marker and make a sc through the BBO of the marked st. Then make a slst through the BBO of the next 2 sts. This will correct the “jog” from crocheting in a spiral.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
