Making cute little crochet stars is a fun Fourth of July or Holiday project. They’re perfect for decorating your table if you have a party, and their use doesn’t end there.

I love attaching them to baby blankets and hats for a cute star theme, but they also make a nice bunting or wall art when added to a picture frame. I’ve even made several of these and attached some twine for a cute handmade Christmas tree ornament, and they look adorable as handmade gift tags for your presents.

About This Simple Crochet Star Pattern

This easy crochet star pattern takes just two rounds to complete, and it’s simple, even for someone new to crocheting. I’ve written the pattern for one size using medium-weight yarn, but you can use different yarn weights and hook sizes to make other sizes.

Recommended Supplies

This pattern is very versatile, and you can use almost any yarn in your stash to make cute stars. I tested it with all sorts of yarn scraps, from the fluffy Homespun yarn to the super bulky Go For Faux yarn. They all turned out great!

While any weight yarn I used worked well, medium-weight and bulky yarn looked the best to me. The blue star in the picture is crocheted with Bernat Maker yarn, and an 8mm crochet hook, without changing the pattern. This was also one of my favorite crochet stars!

Easy crochet star crocheted with blue bluky weight yarn, and red and white medium-weight yarn.

After making lots of these little crochet stars, I found that using a hook one size bigger than usual for the yarn made the nicest looking star, with less curl than those made with a smaller hook. I also noticed that cotton, nylon, acrylic, and other plant and synthetic fiber yarns held their shape better than yarns with wool. So, feel free to play with your yarn and hook choices! They only take about 10 minutes to crochet, so you won’t spend too much time to get the look you want!

Pattern Notes

This cute little crochet star is available in one size only. You can change the size a bit by using thicker yarn and a larger hook for a bigger star or thinner yarn and a smaller hook for a smaller star. With medium-weight yarn and the recommended hook size, your crochet star will be about 4 inches wide. Don’t worry if your measurements are a bit different.

To make a bigger crochet star: Use bulky weight yarn (#5) and a 8 mm crochet hook

To make a smaller crochet star: Use lightweight yarn (#3) and a 4 mm crochet hook.

Red, white and blue crochet star

You can try different yarn weights and hook sizes to change the size of your star without adjusting the pattern. This is the easiest way to make a bigger or smaller star. The blue star in the picture is made with Bernat Maker yarn, a #5 weight, and an 8 mm crochet hook. The other stars are made with #4 medium-weight yarns and a 5 mm crochet hook.

If you’re not sure which hook size to use, check the yarn label for guidance. It will recommend a hook size that should work well for making a nice star. You can even go up a hook size from the recommendation to see less curling on the star’s points.

Gauge: Use the finished size to check your gauge.

Finished Size: 4″ wide

Finishing the Crochet Star

Once you’re done with the second round, fasten off and weave in the ends. If your star doesn’t look perfect right off the hook, no worries! It might look a bit scrunched up from being held while you crocheted it. Just your your hands to flatten it out and do some finger blocking.

If it’s still not quite what you want, wet blocking is another option! If you’re not sure about blocking, check out this article I have that explains everything you need to know about it.
