What I really like about cuddle-sized baby blankets is that they’re great for practicing new stitches. They’re big enough for you to get the hang of the stitch, but not so big that it’ll take forever to finish.

This is my go-to modern baby blanket knitting pattern. The texture resembles the classic basketweave stitch, but with a cool modern touch.

And if you’re still not sure about this blanket, the best part is that it knits up super quick using two strands of yarn together, but it doesn’t end up bulky like some thicker yarns do.

About This Modern Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern

This blanket is made by knitting with two strands of medium-weight (#4) yarn held together. This makes the blanket even cozier and speeds up the knitting process. Once you get the hang of the stitch pattern, you could finish this modern baby blanket in just one week if you really focus.

The stitch pattern is visually appealing, so it looks great in one color. But if you want to get creative, you can also play around with different colors!

Update! Due to many requests, I have added three additional sizes to this blanket! Now you can knit your favorite petite lovie-sized blanket in standard baby blanket, lap, and couch throw sizes!

Pattern Overview:

You can view the pattern completely free on this page. But, if you prefer having a digital copy that you can save or print, we’ve got you covered with that option as well.

Recommended Supplies

I used Red Heart Amore yarn to knit the blanket in the pictures, but I don’t think this yarn is available anymore. If you want to use something similar, I suggest Lion Brand Feels Like Butta. It has a similar look and feel, plus it comes in lots of nice colors.

Here is the approximate amount of yarn you’ll need to make each size blanket:

SizeYarn Requirement
Lovie835 yds
Standard Baby2,796 yds
Lap2,240 yds
Couch Throw4,604 yds

If you’re still new to knitting and not sure what needle to use, I suggest sticking with two strands of medium-weight yarn and a US 11 (8 mm) knitting needle. Make sure it’s a circular needle at least 24 inches long for the lovie size, or a 36″ long circular needle for the larger sizes so all the stitches can fit on it at once.

Pattern Notes

To achieve this modern basketweave look, this stitch pattern repeats every 12 rows, but don’t worry! Many of the rows are the same or very similar to each other. Plus, you only need to know how to do knits and purls for the whole project.

The trickiest part of knitting this blanket is keeping track of which row you’re on. The best thing to do is to have the pattern in front of you as you work. It’s also handy to have a printed copy so you can check off each row as you finish it. You can print this pattern by purchasing the PDF from my shop.

Finished Size:

  • Lovie: 26″ x 26″
  • Standard Baby: 42″ x 52″
  • Lap: 36″ x 48″
  • Couch Throw: 48″ x 72″

Gauge: 15.5 stitches and 20.5 rows = 4″ worked in stitch pattern

Gauge isn’t super important for this pattern, but it’s good to check. Knit the pattern until it’s about 5 inches from the starting edge, then measure the stitches and rows in a 4-inch square.

If you don’t get the same number of stitches and rows when you measure gauge, don’t worry too much. For clothing, gauge matters a lot more, but for a blanket, it’s not a big deal.

Just remember, if your stitches are larger, you might need more yarn than what’s suggested, since you’re knitting them a bit bigger.

If you’re not sure about gauge and why it matters, I suggest reading this article!

This pattern is now available in 4 different sizes: Lovie, standard baby, lap and couch throw. Each size differs in the number of stitches you cast on initially, and how long you knit the repeat for. You’ll find the instructions for each of these sizes provided in the following way:
